Spaniard defender reveals what was said before Anfield clash
Chelsea defender, Cesar Azpilicueta, has revealed that it was down
to Nemanja Matic's pre-match team-talk that motivated the players to see
off Livepool.The Spanish international revealed that the Serbian rallied the team ahead of kick-off at Anfield, and The Blues went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to goals from Gary Cahill and Diego Costa.
Jose Mourinho's men did go 1-0 down after Emre Can gave the hosts the lead, but two goals from the visitors saw the three-points return to Stamford Bridge.
After the game, Azpilicueta revealed that Matic was the man that rallied the players and it was his speech that got the team motivated.
"He just said if we want to be champions then we needed to win the game,” Azpilicueta told the club's website.
“It’s our target to be champions and when you go to the stadiums where it’s really hard you have to do a very good job.”
As well as Azpilicueta, the club-captain, John Terry, also revealed that Matic's talk was very motivating as well.
"It was very inspiring. Everyone takes their turn before the game and he did very well," he told BT Sport.
“He’s been different class since he came back [from Benfica this summer] and he’s a real player for the team. He’s been at the heart of some great team performances.”
